Hi everyone! My name is Valerie, and I'm a first year walker walking in Chicago. First, I need tips on how to raise my last $300, I've done everything! Letters, emails, the whole shebang! Also, I was supposed to be walking with a friend, but they just had to back out and now I'm a little nervous to be walking and tenting alone. It's be really nice if I could just have someone to meet at the starting line or something! I'm also training in Champaign, IL (where I go to school), so does anyone know a walker here? My family has a history of the BCRA gene, and although I haven't been tested yet I wanted to help join the fight! I'm in it to end it! -Valerie
Thanks for joining the cause! I'm a first year walker as well in Chicago. I just joined a month ago so I'm still getting moving on the fundraising gig, but wanted to wish you well. I grew up in the Champaign area (St. Joseph). Have you thought about sending a press release to the News Gazette and seeing if they'll do an article for you?
I participated in the 3 Day in 2007 and had my friend back out on me a few months before the walk. I was a little nervous going to Atlanta and walking by myself but when I started walking I realized that I am not alone. There will be plenty of people walking around you so that you do not feel alone. Good luck!!
I am a first time walker too and I am traveling from the Virgin Islands to be a part of this event! I JUST started my fundreaising so I don't have anythng to offer in the way of support but I am happy to keep in touch and be a friendly face at the start!
Welcome, Valerie!!!!!! I live in Springfield and went to Champaign for law school. You've got a great place for training walks. As for the last $300, my general mantra is "food sells". On a college campus, having a bake sale or selling candy bars, etc. would seem like a quick way to make money. Students are always hungry. I know you don't have a lot of free time (like next to none), however, once the weather gets nice more often, I know that the quad will be full of hungry students. A few pans of brownies, some bags of cookies, cupcakes and maybe even some bottled water and you should hit $300 without too much effort. Just an idea.
Again, thanks so much for joining this great cause. You're going to have the experience of your life!
Susan
PS I would also recommend joining a team. I'm part of the Solo Strutters. They have walkers in every Avon Walk city and they're a great group of people. The team includes people of all ages and they're very helpful and supportive (and a little nuts.....ok, maybe that's just me). They've got tons of experience and can answer any question you might have. If you're interested, contact Judy Cherry our team captain. The nice part is that, with talking to everyone online, by the time the walk gets here, you'll have lots of friends at the walk itself - even a tent mate if you like. Good luck with your fund raising.
