I like to know what type of snacks do you carry in your backpack.  I know to have water.  I will have my gum, towel, shoes, and socks, jacket.

There are supplies along the way, but I also carry a small blister repair kit. And a camera.
I didn't think about a camera. This is one in a life time event for me.

Thanks so much

Thanks, you mention a lot of things I didn't think of.
We (my husband carries for both of us) carry blister kit, extra socks for both, tissues, sunscreen, ponchos, camera, cell phone (we post pictures to facebook along the way - it's great for the people who have supported you financially and emotionally to see your progress), gum. I train in the sneakers I wear that day - so I don't carry an extra pair - but I do bring an extra for the 2nd day in case of rain. I don't make him carry snacks, because there are so many stops along the way. This year I'm not carrying the baby wipes, the hand sanitizer and we're only bringing one water bottle between us.

Two pieces of advice.
1. Do your training WITH the backpack.
2. We had very mild weather last year and didn't realize how much he was sweating under the pack and he got pretty dehydrated - take that into consideration.
The only time I carry snacks is when I am training. I take several pairs of extra socks, foot cream or vaseline, water bottle, camera, ibuprofein or aspirin, kleenex, cell phone, id (drivers license), cash (I tend to grab a diet Pepsi or two somewhere along the route), rain poncho, and whatever else seems to strike me that weekend. You'll need less than you take but it is good to have when you need them.
One essential item I started carrying inside my backpack after the firrst rainy walk: a "dry bag". These are used for water sports such as kayaking, but they are invaluable in the rain! I can stuff all of my things (camera, cell phone, etc.) into the bag, which fits nicely into my small backpack.

We just use Ziploc bags. All sizes. Even in our overnight bag, I put Sat night clothes in a zip loc and our clothes for Sunday in another one. EVERYTHING goes in a zip loc....
While at the store picking up a poncho today, this actually came to mind. I'm an avid kayaker and I have several I use for those same reasons.
Hi! You'll need "moleskin" for blisters, nail clippers (just in case), foot powder, extra shirt (just in case). I also, would only bring a copy of your drivers license + insurance card since you will be traveling quite far + you never know what might happen. I would carry a little bit of cash. I would not recommend bringing a credit card.
Depending on your need for a caffeine fix, you may want to carry a Duncan Donuts or Starbucks pre-paid card. I used mine in Boston, Charlotte and NY last year. Way more convenient that carrying change.
This moleskin, where does one find it?
