My family has been hit hard. Growing up, my sister and I always had two moms at home: our mom and Grandma. I walk for Grandma and all of her sugar plums: Aunt Chris, Aunt Elaine, Aunt Estelle, and Aunt Kathleen.
Grandma didn't have her first mammogram until she was 70 years old, when they discovered a lump. She had a lumpectomy, extracting the cancer and surrounding tissue. In two years, the cancer returned and her breast was removed. The anti-cancer drug she was on lost its effectiveness after about 5 years. The cancer came back aggressively, and she died at age 82, on what would have been Aunt Chris' 51st birthday.
Aunt Christine developed breast cancer at age 46, and died after a five-year battle, just before Grandma passed away.
As Christine was going through chemotherapy, Aunt Elaine got breast cancer. She had a double mastectomy at age 62. This year she will celebrate her 3-year anniversary of being cancer-free.
Aunt Estelle died a few months after her 65th birthday after a 3-year battle with breast cancer.
Aunt Kathleen developed breast cancer in her mid-40s, and had reconstructive surgery less than a year before she was killed in a car accident.
My walk is in honor of those we've lost, and it's in honor of those who are still battling right now. Most of all, it's for both of my moms. I wouldn't have the strength I have without them.
