I would start slow and build up. Never to early to start. 13 miles is a long way to walk. there is a lot of support out there.

I found wigwam socks they are cushioned and do well with wicking away sweat. I bought at sports authority. however $$$

I have had problems with certian shoes. Try a different pair of shoes or inserts like dr schols
